• Cancer is the fourth astrological sign in the zodiac, taking place between June 22nd and July 22nd. The constellation of Cancer is sometimes depicted as a lobster or crayfish, but most often represents the crab, based on Karkinos, or Karka in Hindu mythology. In Egyptian myth, the constellation was also seen as a scarab beetle.

I love the concept of this sculpt, though I do wish the arrangement gave the crab a little more "face time" - I decided not to glue either figure to the base so that I can remove the woman when I want to show off the crab itself. I tried to step a bit more out of my painting comfort zone again on this sculpt with some more "obvious" highlighting - I am typically a very gradient-happy, smooth transition kinda shader, but something about the fabric and the way it was gathered made me want to give it a little extra oomph. I'm also super excited that my fluorescent paints from the same Kickstarter that the figure came from were extremely see-through when painted on, because it gave me this amazing opportunity to paint as I pleased as normal, then go back and add the fluor paint on top without really having to worry about the blue covering up the silver in the regular light.

This is the second sign posted in my Zodiac project, originally on June 22nd, 2022

Sculpt is by Scale75 from their Zodiac Mystic Signs Kickstarter - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/scale75/zodiac-mystic-signs

    75mm 1/24 Scale

Painted using acrylics by hand with brushes only (I do not own an airbrush).

  • ***(This artwork was first originally published to DeviantArt on 10/01/2009.)***
    ___
As my official entry for the Think Pink IV contest that JunkbyJen (aka Jennifer Barker) had truly hosted on DeviantArt back during October 2009, “***A Calming Pink***” consisted of such a most beautiful and perhaps so awe-inspiring pink heavenly landscape — a deeply healing sanctuary which represents both everlasting hope and possibly the calm serenity and absolute inner peace that one feels (especially after successfully conquering breast cancer, too!!! :D ). So all in all, I believe this is definitely one of my very best pixel-art pieces I have ever, ever done up to that point in time. And also, please note that this is also was my **very first** pixel-based artwork period when i did not at that time even know what pixel art was at all... WOW, that says a whole lot if you ask me!!!

Anyway, as this piece was fully and completely dedicated to my most rather wonderful person named Jennifer Barker (aka ^JunkbyJen) indeed, who at that time was our long-running Gallery Director of the main Digital Art categories on DA who most successfully went into her 8th successful straight year as breast cancer survivor this October of 2009 at the time this pixel piece was made; and also to her own excellent husband Troy as well, let us not forget!!! ;*)

So yeah, this original pixel artwork piece is especially for the both of them indeed. Without question.

Created in just around 24 hours tops using Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 (10th Anniversary Edition) alone with a count of only 17 solid colors with absolutely NO pixel translucency whatsoever, “A Calming Pink” is promisingly one of the most enjoyable original pixel-art pieces you will ever want to look at again and again for the Think Pink IV competition, on which I have hand-drawn the piece myself... and do not forget to check out the details of the waterfalls that I have added and animated for this work, too. And, this piece went on to win the ENTIRE competition in the Pixel Art category... 1st place, ladies and gents!!! d=^-^=b !!!

I thank you all ever so much for such an awesome, AWESOME time, and be sure not to miss this quite most Think Pink IV contest entry of mine right here!! Bye for now!!!

Plus I really needed to draw Zahira more but to speed up the ocs references I was thinking about posting only the sketches but put like 3 of them in a single drawing instead of 1 ^^ And also I have many prizes for the art raffle to post and 2 of them are already ready and I will be posting them in the next 2 weeks!!

  • I’m in the process of tweaking the zodiac designs again, for what seems like the 80th time at this rate xD I have several of these in the works right now, but I managed to finish the base redesign for Cancer here so I thought I’d share. I arrived at a better pose for her after doing some silhouette work on the whole lineup, I think it captures her “go with the flow” kind of attitude. This is also the fourth or fifth iteration of her legs, probably the most difficult and technical aspect of her design overall, though they have more cosmetic than functional changes this time around.

Her full sheet will have more info, like how her Claw Cannons work and additional views of her armour, but I really wanted to share these now since it’s the only thing I’ve managed to finish in about a month in a sea of WIPs ;-; Quite happy with the redesign overall though, the shapes have a better balance and flow, and the addition of another accent colour makes it feel more complete to me. The main reason I stayed away from orange for her initially is because her personality is a lot more laid back compared to what would be a pretty loud colour scheme if orange was the main colour, but I really like it as an accent here. More to come!

  • These are my own depictions of the Zodiac Signs that I created to be produced as stickers. They were initially made for my "Process & Production" brief for my 2nd year at university.

    Just something to keep in mind for all of these designs;
Each outcome is a combination of the following factors: Their Element (Fire, Earth, Air and Water), their assigned colour(s), their birthstone(s), and their general depictions.
However I did fluctuate in terms of how much of the design they take up; so some designs have more of a colour palette portraying their month's birthstone(s) but nothing for their associated colour(s) or element .

Also just to clarify in regards to Gemini- The left twin is Castor, and the one to his right is Pollux. I tried to incorporate a lightning bolt shape to Pollux's hairstyle in order to differentiate him more; this is based on Greek mythology where he is the biological son of Zeus. And since Castor is not a son of Zeus, I gave him more relaxed hair than his twin.

    Gemini:
    Also known as: The Twins
Start & End Dates: 21st May to 21st June
    Element: Air (Masculine)
    Ruling Planet(s): Mercury
    Primary Birthstone(s): Pearl
    Assigned Colour(s): Yellow
Chosen Symbol Placement: Upper Left Arm (Castor) & Upper Right Arm (Pollux)

    Cancer:
    Also known as: The Crab
Start & End Dates: 22nd June to 22nd July
    Element: Water (Feminine)
    Ruling Planet(s): The Moon
    Primary Birthstone(s): Moonstone (Conveniently^^)
Assigned Colour(s): Ranges from soft white to silver and pale blue
    Chosen Symbol Placement: Back

    Designs were created by Me
Created between 21st November 2023 and 12th December 2023 (From sketchbook to digital)

  • **Originally Created On:** January 10th, 2020

January is always a slow month for me in terms of uploads, though I’d been posting a lot of WIPs for other stuff elsewhere since the start of the month. I’ve been meaning to finalize this for a while, so if you’ve ever wondered what Cancer looks like without her armour, here you go. xD
Knights used to wear what’s called a gambeson, which is basically a padded jacket under their armour that sometimes had hand / arm guards, so that’s pretty much what I’ve given her here. I wanted to give it a less contrasting colour scheme so it didn’t seem like another set of armour underneath. The colours were hard to figure out but the pose was fun at least!
