  • Cancer is the fourth astrological sign in the zodiac, taking place between June 22nd and July 22nd. The constellation of Cancer is sometimes depicted as a lobster or crayfish, but most often represents the crab, based on Karkinos, or Karka in Hindu mythology. In Egyptian myth, the constellation was also seen as a scarab beetle.

I love the concept of this sculpt, though I do wish the arrangement gave the crab a little more "face time" - I decided not to glue either figure to the base so that I can remove the woman when I want to show off the crab itself. I tried to step a bit more out of my painting comfort zone again on this sculpt with some more "obvious" highlighting - I am typically a very gradient-happy, smooth transition kinda shader, but something about the fabric and the way it was gathered made me want to give it a little extra oomph. I'm also super excited that my fluorescent paints from the same Kickstarter that the figure came from were extremely see-through when painted on, because it gave me this amazing opportunity to paint as I pleased as normal, then go back and add the fluor paint on top without really having to worry about the blue covering up the silver in the regular light.

This is the second sign posted in my Zodiac project, originally on June 22nd, 2022

  • My very first piece to be posted here to InkBlot that isn't already posted somewhere else - feels good that it's the next member of the Zodiac!

I spent time copy/pasting my descriptions from my other gallery for the other Zodiac minis, but honestly, does anyone even read them? If you're reading this, leave me a comment, I really want to know if it's worth putting things in here, haha.

I am painting my way through a series of Zodiac miniatures from Scale75's Zodiac Mystic Signs Kickstarter! I post each miniature on the first day of their respective season, so if you like what you see and want to follow the rest of the signs, give me a follow and you'll see the next sign each month! :)

  • I've been going veeeery slow with my uploads, just so I don't burn out all at once - but I do have a "schedule" that I've kept for my Zodiac project, and I'm wondering how best to handle the lead up to Sagittarius. Should I post the previous figures all at once, then give Sagittarius some space? Or should I post them each on separate days to give each one some time to shine?

Decisions, decisions... (no really, I want your opinion, what do you think? There are 6 before Sagittarius, so I have to decide pretty soon if I'm going to separate them out O.o

  • Decided to start things off with an older (but one of my favorite) piece; my first large-scale dragon that I painted. I was going for an "ice" aesthetic, and always love me some good gradients, so the white and blue got to show off a lot here. :)

Pathfinder Gargantuan White Dragon sculpt, painted entirely by hand with traditional brushes and acrylic paint (I do not own an airbrush)

  • Scale75 Mystic Signs - Aquarius from their Mystic Signs Kickstarter.

My Aquarius friends (and favorite artist) requested an iridescent "gasoline puddle" inspired look when I was asking for colors to use. I think his coat turned out pretty awesome!

Aquarius here marks my NINTH miniature in this series. Check out the rest on my profile, and stay tuned for the next few months for Pisces, Ares, and Taurus (plus a mysterious thirteenth sign!).

Miniature is in 75mm scale, painted by hand with acrylics. I do not own an airbrush.

  • Taurus marks the 12th and final member of the Zodiac miniature set! I'm so excited that I completed the full set, and on time! Ares and Taurus both were down to the wire, but I did it! :)

  • Libra is the seventh sign of the Zodiac. The scales of the constellation Libra symbolize those held by the Greek goddess, Themis, who is the personification of law, custom, and justice. Themis is the inspiration for modern-day depictions of the personification of Lady Justice along with Justita and Dike.

Libra represents balance, which I think this model pulls off beautifully (even if it made me nervous as I was gluing her together!). Everything on it has a degree of symmetry, from her staff, to her back piece with the snakes which combined with the tassels and ring look very much like the Libra scales themselves. I will admit, as much as I love how she turned out, Libra has been the most difficult model to complete so far. I was having a rough time with my hands while I worked on her, and it was very down to the wire in terms of having time to take pictures, edit, and write up this post. I'm hoping I haven't run out of steam yet - after all, Scorpio is right around the corner! I am noticing that as this project goes on, I am getting more efficient at certain parts of the paint job. Five models in as many months is no small feat - and I'm going for 12 for 12 still!

My Libra friends who picked her colors were happy to see that she is both standing for trans rights as well as repping that bisexual energy (which hey, makes sense with "balance" right?).

  • Can you tell I love me some dragons? :3

I especially love giving them a "twist" on the abilities of a given dragon color in D&D. So this is my buddy Rainier, who was originally just a regular Red Dragon until he made his home a volcano - and became more than just a Red Dragon - he became a Magma Dragon!

As with all my minis, no airbrush used (I don't own one). Painted with acrylics by hand.

  • Is beauty in the eye of the beholder?

It is when I'm the one painting the eye! ;)

I love this guy. He was a blast to paint, and this sculpt seems to be a "right of passage" for a lot of D&D mini painters out there. Mine is the only Orange I've ever seen, but I've also seen some wild takes that I absolutely love! I have a few more of this sculpt around and will probably paint him in other styles later, but right now the Zodiac minis take all my time. :D

  • Scale75 Mystic Signs Aries 75mm scale version
Painted by hand (no airbrush) with acrylics

I have been in Physical Therapy the last month, and was too tired to work on him through the month like normal. I finished him on the 20th, just in time to snap photos and get him posted by the deadline.

Aries is the second-to-last model in the set - one more to go!!!

  • Moving to a new house is hard for able-bodied people, let alone someone with joints that bend too far and muscles that give up too early.

Been going non-stop for over a week and oh boy did my body remind me of that today! Took it easy (mostly), and really happy that I have next week off too. I was smart enough to know I'd be deceased after the move, at least. Gotta get started on Capricorn soon!
