The birdies running into battle together! Taaffeite Starling by Me Variscite Melodious Blackbird by Mako

Another bird! What can I say, I love birds. This palette comes from a German (I'm pretty sure) postcard from 1907. So last spring, I went back to school to get some graphic design credentials. In one of my classes we were assigned to make a series of pieces exploring [the gestalt principles of grouping](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principles_of_grouping). I decided to focus on pigeons to give myself a palette and a cohesive theme to work with, and one of my favorite pieces I've ever done with part of that assignment. It was just a pigeon where the main body was the same color as the background, so the shape is created by the other markings. [You can see it here](https://www.side7.com/content/a391AlmN9L). Like I said, I really loved that piece and when I originally saw the 1903 palette I really wanted to make another piece like that with a macaw. But I just didn't have a light color to do the face with, so I did the red-winged blackbird instead. I was a little worried that the colors were too dark, particularly the yellow. In the postcard, the yellow looks very brown. But the postcard is mostly blue and the yellow is used on a few pair of pants, while this piece is mostly red and, of course, the yellow is on a bird instead of pants. But it's a great example of how both recontextualizing and rebalancing a palette can completely change how the colors look.

This group of bold adventurers is the party of the Lady Blackbird roleplay campaign I've been playing in for the past nine or so months. From up to down and from left to right: -Snargle, the pilot -Kale, the mechanic -Naomi, the lady's bodyguard -Cyrus, the captain -Natasha, the lady in disguise. I've been playing as Naomi. We finished the campaign a couple weeks ago and I wanted to follow my personal tradition of drawing the party. It was such a funny campaign, full of crazyness, tension, plottwists, drama and love, lots of love.

Today's palette is from a French chocolate ad with a very cool almost Looney Tunesque character design from 1903. I really wanted to try out a Toulouse Lautrec style with this palette, but I would've needed a skintone. Ah well, instead have a red winged blackbird, one of my favorite birds. I could've done more with the blue highlights but I haven't been getting a lot of sleep this week and I'm exhausted. I was more interested in getting the form of the bird right and the red and yellow shoulder.

At some point during the Lady Blackbird campaign we went to a ball party, which gave me the perfect excuse to draw pretty people dressed up. From left to right: Naomi, Natasha, Cyrus, Snargle and Kale. I tried to draw everyone's clothes as described by the players, although I also did take some artistic licenses xDDDDD If the colors are wrong that's all the scanner's fault (?)

Violetmist is generally grumpy, rude and quite vain RiverClan deputy. She is rarely in a good mood, but when she is, she shines. She is small, lithe and fast, and very fluffy. She loves blackbird and collects the feathers to take to the nursery. She wants kits of her own one day and loves to spend time with the kits. She fears she will never have a mate because the toms all avoid her and she knows that the she-cats in her Clan want kits, and she won't be able to provide that. So she spends as much time as she can in the nursery. The mothers don't like her all that much but she keeps the kits occupied. She despises Willowpetal a ThunderClan she-cat, as she is the reason Violetshine has scars on her face, wounds she took during a battle that her Clan lost. She prefers fighting and border patrol over hunting, even though she is the best hunter in her Clan. She's always prone to fight first and ask questions later. Her battle tactics are get in quick, hit and retreat. Her main weakness is her weak eye. She's not blind but her eye was damaged and she struggles to see clearly out of her scarred side.
