A piece of stop-motion that I made for my Final Major Project at university.
Just a reminder: My final project revolves around creating an animatic music video, with my song of choice being one of my absolute favourite Glass Animals song, "Creatures in Heaven" from their 2024 album "I Love You So F***ing Much."
This was my first proper experience with doing the particular form of animation, and I found it more enjoyable than expected! Something about the rough aspect to it makes it seem more beautiful to watch.
At the time though I only had enough time to create 10 seconds worth of motion, with 81 photos in total taken (was 85 but first 4 were just tester photos).
I wanted to make sure some heavenly imagery was present so I included a planet with a large eye.
The planets were partially random;
- "Pink Jupiter" as I like to call it is a small portrayal to reality, given my design looks similar to the actual gas giant."
- The green planet is supposed to be a small nod to Earth, a reminder of the more grounded parts of a platonic/romantic relationship, and also a reference to the beginning song of the album "Show Pony", since the lead singer of the band Dave Bayley has come out saying the songs from start to finish are a journey, beginning on Earth, then travelling through outer space before returning to Earth, ending with the song "Lost in the Ocean".
- The orange/yellow planet is meant represent the passionate side of love, showing how much we care for those close to us, and want to make the relationship(s) work.
- And for the final planet I wanted to represent the heartbreak that can occur after ending a relationship. It can feel like you've lost a part of yourself in a storm of thoughts, reflecting back and thinking whether or not it was your fault. The colour palette mainly consists of those that are said to represent heartbreak. I even added a broken heart within the design as a little detail.
If I had more time I would have made it so all the planets move off screen, because it could work as the intro before transitioning, considering the first 10-12 seconds of "Creatures in Heaven" has no lyrics and only music. Which turned out to be highly coincidental with the length of my video.
Planets were done on card with pencil & oil pastels
Space Background was made with cartridge paper and both black & white paint (I flicked the white paint with a brush to get the appearance of distance stars)
Video was created digitally with a photography camera, then edited on iMovie.
