This is the other of two pieces I made as my phone’s backgrounds at the time, which is why the image size is smaller compared to what I usually use, even back then. Despite these two pieces being nearly a decade old at the time of posting this, I still like them quite a lot. I’m not sure how, but there’s a lot about them that still hold up. The eye’s shading in particular is something that I’m not even sure how to replicate, though maybe if I unearth the PSD I’ll find out. I should remake these sometime and bring back some old techniques!

Going through my old artwork at the time reminded me of something that was said about me a long time ago:

"If it's not a fox or a dragon, I don't think she could do it."

This isn't a phrase that haunts me, nor am I an advocate for spite as a prime motivator for making art (okay, maybe a little bit), but I did reflect on things a bit while making this.

I've had a long history of focusing on one or two subjects in my work, especially when I was still in public school. I even gained some notoriety as "the dragon artist" during this time, and while I wear that title proudly, my ideas have more variety than I ever could have hoped for, especially back then. I think that phrase stuck with me for this reason, along with it being from an unexpected source. I think this speaks to the evolution of not only my design work overall, but to the scope of my characters and stories.

While there certainly is merit to defying your naysayers, I wanted this to be a more positive reflection; a small sample of what I am capable of now, a mix of old and new. Yes a dragon, a fox, an owl, a cat, not the least bit unexpected. But there's so much more. You want a butterfly-moth hybrid that can wield a bow and arrow? A sea monster queen with rainbow hair? A spunky shapeshifter with a tiger arm? Either way, I got you. B)

I’ve been working on more character rotations, and I finally finished one for our bug friend Scutum here! Rotations are arguably the hardest part of character design and are therefore very technical, but I find them really rewarding to get right. :’D I’ve found new ways to approach them, which has made the process much easier and far more accurate, so I think this is the best rotation I’ve done to date. I’ll need to do an updated mockup of his wings and open shell, as well as a rotation for his shield form, but that’ll come later! Since he has a symmetrical design I didn’t necessarily need to show all 8 views this time, but I’ll need all the views for reference eventually anyway. Feels a bit more complete that way too!

After finishing Kiida’s reference last month, I started the process of making updated reference sheets for the Z-Squadron, starting with their leader Zander! While each of them have at least basic ref sheets already, not all of them were polished back when they were first made, and thus only some of them have been uploaded so far. I’m hoping to fix that soon so everybody gets new references this time, so stay tuned for those later!

In case you’re curious, Zander and his siblings are all loosely based on the lime hawk moth, and each of their wing patterns has a hint to a personality trait or their main role in the squadron. In Zander’s case, his pattern is the most feather-like, matching his cloak and hinting at the “hawk” part of his design’s inspiration. It also looks a bit like speed lines, hinting at his love of fast and fancy flying. He is the squadron’s leader, after all. Hawks and other birds are predators to the characters in this story, so in that context a cloak like this shows a sense of confidence from the wearer, and perhaps recklessness too!

Zander is certainly confident, but more in a “go with the flow” kind of way rather than out of arrogance or excessive pride. That said though, sometimes his curiosity can get the better of him and he doesn’t fully think through a dangerous situation, often landing him into more trouble than his siblings by comparison. Luckily for him, he’s fast enough to escape most threats, but he does still need to be bailed out every so often.

I wanted at least something to post in December considering I usually don’t have much (all my remaining energy is reserved for gift art this time of year), so I managed to finish a drawing of Queen Eagle, mother to Prince Arvais in Feather Knights. I’ve been fiddling with her and King Eagle’s designs off-and-on for a while, but never anything polished until now. Some stuff might change when I do her full body design, but it was fun to do more of a closeup/portrait of the character, it’s been a while!

I get endless inspiration from animal themed costuming (that’s pretty much why The Wing Knight Saga exists in the first place haha), so it was fun to find ways to incorporate the harpy eagle’s feather pattern and colours into this design. Though I have yet to draw her husband, I plan to have her be taller/larger than him, alluding to the harpy eagle’s status as one of the largest eagle species.

Definitely a simpler rotation this time around but an important one nonetheless! Flicker, Cassie’s little companion and guardian of the zodiac portal.
One thing I’ve noticed about making quadrupedal rotations compared to bipedal ones is that you often have to shift the stance of the character to properly show how things like the limbs rotate, even if they normally wouldn’t appear in that view for rotation accurate posing. Luckily Flicker’s design is simple enough that I could maintain consistency, but I’ll see how I’ll do with other rotations like this.

Okay I've had this at nearly done for like a year and then COMPLETELY forgot about it, so I thought I'd finish cleaning it up as a sort of warmup for today lol

The Storm Hawks as the birds they're based on, though I didn't want to leave Radarr out so I based him on an Eastern Bluebird c: Piper has a teeny bit of oriole in there too, as a callback to her first design.

  • Another commission for the incredibly supportive VioletStrike214 on Twitter! Definitely a lot more muted in colour than I usually do, and a lot more militaristic as well (outside of my anthropomorphic bug characters I guess haha), but I like the challenge :) Thanks again for commissioning me!

Hey all! This was one of four entries for Clip Studio’s Galaxy’s Cutest contest, made with Procreate for the iPad! Since multiple entries are allowed per person, I decided to do a mini series of illustrations featuring my mascot character Starlie and her mom Starlette, baking some cupcakes :’D Hope you like <3

And now for the main rival to Little Falls High, Havendale Heights! I’ll probably draw their mascot eventually like I did with Roary, but for now here’s the emblem. :D

This team appears even less than the stuff for LFHS but hey! That feel when you reference your own projects within other projects. xD Havendale is the name of Snowy’s village in Feather Knights, and after rhyming Heights with Knights I was sold on the name, aha.

A bit of a smaller upload today, but another finished WIP nonetheless! This is Tucana, the youngest member of the Southern Birds (Phoenix’s dance group). Primarily under the care of Pavo, Tucana likes to imitate a lot of the different styles of the other members, but favours baton twirling herself. She can catch it in her beak or balance it on top, or catch it in the folds of her wing feathers. She’ll perform for anyone who asks, but still has to practice with her group of course! Would you watch her dance if given the chance? :)
