  • Back in December I stumbled on [Hero Forge](https://www.heroforge.com/), which seems to be the best-quality and fullest-featured custom miniature maker on the Web. How I found it is lost to memory, but I had so much fun with it that I bit the bullet and registered an account, as it lets you save mockups for free.

    My second test-run on DYOS characters, this too is a revised version with better colours. Unfortunately there's no option for patterns on clothing (yet), else I would've tried for proper camo. As with [TB](https://inkblot.art/post/T5F0AXs1mP9TgZDmkpXr), they've since improved hand posing on weapons.

  • Practice sketches of Krieger, prepared, ironically, for ThreshTheSky's own [art practice contest](https://threshthesky.deviantart.com/journal/New-Contest-New-Kiriban-431572450), as there were literally no good references I could find worthy of his inspection. Still not perfect, but at least I consider these sufficient for the task.

    Rudolph stems from the same pre-DYOS project as Toyoda, although technically he was first put to paper even earlier. He joined the Bundesheer in 1991 and on special commendation was promoted to the KSK in 1997, serving as part of a secretive six-man squad nicknamed the *Weiße Wölfe* (White Wolves). In addition to usual special forces operations, the unit served as part of the shadow war against my recurring arch-villain; he had a penchant for genetically-engineered monstrosities and the team was often tasked with "cleanup operations", a euphemism for sometimes ruthless quarantine and sterilization procedures that earned the Wolves the unflattering nickname "the Angels of Death". The unit was controversially disbanded in 2004 and Krieger retired from the Bundeswehr, only to resurface as a soldier under contract with the Russian army the same year, the exact reason why involving longstanding plot spoilers. Ironically, DYOS provides a more plausible justification for how he ended up with the Russians than the original setting.

  • Yesterday I fired up Lego Digital Designer for the first time in months, and the update was so large it downloaded a new software package. :p My immediate investigation yielded a smorgasbord of new parts, textures, and colours, especially for the minifigs, so I put together this novel cast portrait of a handful of DYOS protagonists.

    UPDATE 7-12-12: Switched CG's sword to a lightsaber, because *duuuh!*; added Bjørn and Captain2.

    Front row, left to right: Rudolph Krieger, e350tb, moi, GenSamus, Marsha Conrad.

    Centre row: Rhiza Kalanin, Bjørn; choxorn, Gruekiller.

    Back row: Stylesrj, Captain2.

  • So there I was, wanting to DYOS anything but an actual *page*, and then I thought: "What if the DYOSers were women?" This was actually started a couple months ago, but the last 80% was done this week after stalling on a *different* sketch. I'm not sure how expansive I originally intended it to be, but once I'd mentioned it on IOT Chat the other day and several people said they wanted to see the end product, I knew I was aiming big.

    The result is most of the main contributors from DYOS 10–12 for whom I could readily think of a proper feminine counterpart, plus a couple of my characters. Peter takes centre stage because he was the first one tried before I realized how many I needed to fit on the page. This is I think the third time I've tried Fem!CG and the first that I felt actually worked; as I struggled with his signature beret, I thought: "Make the *hair* the beret!" NinjaCow64 was a bit of a cop-out, and for certain reasons Omega124 might be cheating. ;)

    Some space remains should further inspiration arise, i.e. Stylesjl & kulade.

    Left to right, starting from top: CivCube, taillesskangaru, Peter Gradunov, Kan-Sharuminar

    Middle: E350tb, NinjaCow64, Captain Reynaud

    Bottom: Lucifer, choxorn, GenSamus, yours truly, Captain2, milizeelashee, Rudolph Krieger.

    All contributors © themselves;

    Lucifer © DaemonDD;

    Rudolph (Adalwolfa?), Peter (Petra?) & Captain Reynaud(e) © me.

  • Another piece that took far more time than the end result justifies. Background was a rush and I debated throwing this into scraps, but the four characters turned out almost exactly as I'd hoped, give or take Peter's left hand, which I might've managed better had I not literally drawn myself into a corner.

    One thing that's always puzzled me about macrophilia is how virtually all the characters you'll ever see stride about like they own the damn place. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Strong Female Characters™, but given the square-cube law, Murphy, and the general rule of averages, there's bound to be at *least* as many klutzes.

    Oh yeah, these things usually have stories:

    NEW PORT, 13:37h

    CG: "...And that concludes the demonstration part of the tour."

    Thorvald: "Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. So when can we expect to receive these ships?"

    CG: "Oh, about the same time as you wrap up Part II, HUEHUEHUE"

    Thorvald: :iconfffuuuplz:

    *Meanwhile, in the experimental wing...*

    Dr. Ivan: "This sucks. I'm missing *Wallander*."

    Peter: "You can head on up, if you want. I'm almost done."

    Dr. Ivan: "Hah! *Nyet.*"

    Peter: "Ooh, look at this contraption! 'Force Multiplier X-10. Warning: Do not use inside UNESCO World Heritage Sites.'"

    Dr. Ivan: "Sounds like some sort of fetish fuel. Don't touch it."

    Peter: "—Oops."

    *Back upstairs...*

    Rudolph: "Mikhail, where's Peter?"

    Mikhail: "Down in the experimental wing, I think."

    Rudolph: "What, *alone?*"

    Mikhail: "Good God, no. The Doctor's keeping an eye on him."

    Rudolph: "Well I guess that's—"

    *The building quakes in a sudden tremor.*

    Rudolph: *shudders*

    *Five minutes later...*

    TV News Anchor: "...We go live to our roving reporter Chase McStory, on the scene of the anomaly."

    Reporter: "Well, Karen, I don't have a tape measure, but I'm pretty sure he's taller than Liberty Prime, so I guess communism wins!"

    Peter: "HA! HA! Enjoy rush hour, suckers!"

    Thorvald: "I swear to God, this wasn't my fault! He wasn't even supposed to be on this trip! You understand me, right CG? ...CG?"

    CG: *stares at scene, mildly aroused*

    Peter: "I can see Palin's house from here!"

    Mikhail: "So how fast can you whip up a fix, Doctor?"

    Dr. Ivan: "I dunno, I'm kinda busy this month... I *might* be able to squeeze in some time Thursday next..."

    Thorvald: "*Dammit*, man, this is a matter of life and death! *Yours*, to be precise!"

    Mikhail: "Well, it's not like Peter's *deliberately* malicious. All we have to do is clear a path out of the city and he can—"

    *Peter trips on a banana truck.*

    Peter: "OH CHYORT—"

    Rudolph: *shudders*

    Demoman: "Thankfully I already don't remember this."

  • Posted at the request of CivGeneral, some scribbles I did during an inter-city bus trip early last Fall, I think. Left to right, top to bottom:

    * e350tb in (super-vague) British officer attire; jet fighter of indeterminate generation;
    * Experimental Older!CivGeneral with a sharper style; Marshal Brusilov; what began as my second attempt at Fem!CG but that I soon decided was Premier Avdotina from FemIOT;
    * Near-future battle tank; Peter attempting what's actually a kitty face;
    * Loose concept insignia for Rudolph's old KSK unit; concept flag for DYOS 10.5.

    CivGeneral and e350tb © themselves.

  • These are the four main characters of a what-if reality TV show about everyone who works at the North Pole going through daily tasks to prepare for the Holiday Christmas Season in The Workshoppers. Starring the hot-headed foreman, Burl Miser (middle right elf and not quite immortal hybrid) and the naughty list forced intern teen, Lani Ives (middle left). They are joined by this story's version of Jack Frost (right), Burl's popular immortal cousin, and the teen descendent of Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer, Davina (left). What could go wrong?! It's not The Office, Parks and Recreation, or any mockumentary you can name.

    If anyone wants me to make a comic series of this idea, I'll be interested if time allows it. I do have a plan to use these guys for this upcoming Christmas and Holiday season this year. If anyone wants to make fanart based on these characters must let me know.

    Jack Frost is inspired by the multiple Rankin-Bass designs of the character. Davina is inspired by Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer. Fun fact: Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer is not public domain. Also, Lani's skin color had changed after talking to a friend whose also from Hawaii and gave me some great points when I first created Lani back in April.
