Avian august piece. I was experimenting with ways to render feathers that didn't take eight billion years. Came out decent.

After finishing Kiida’s reference last month, I started the process of making updated reference sheets for the Z-Squadron, starting with their leader Zander! While each of them have at least basic ref sheets already, not all of them were polished back when they were first made, and thus only some of them have been uploaded so far. I’m hoping to fix that soon so everybody gets new references this time, so stay tuned for those later!

In case you’re curious, Zander and his siblings are all loosely based on the lime hawk moth, and each of their wing patterns has a hint to a personality trait or their main role in the squadron. In Zander’s case, his pattern is the most feather-like, matching his cloak and hinting at the “hawk” part of his design’s inspiration. It also looks a bit like speed lines, hinting at his love of fast and fancy flying. He is the squadron’s leader, after all. Hawks and other birds are predators to the characters in this story, so in that context a cloak like this shows a sense of confidence from the wearer, and perhaps recklessness too!

Zander is certainly confident, but more in a “go with the flow” kind of way rather than out of arrogance or excessive pride. That said though, sometimes his curiosity can get the better of him and he doesn’t fully think through a dangerous situation, often landing him into more trouble than his siblings by comparison. Luckily for him, he’s fast enough to escape most threats, but he does still need to be bailed out every so often.

_''Crested Jaguars are a very large mammal from the genus ‘ Panthera’, named for their large fin-like crests either side of their necks and large rosettes covering most of their body. Some can say they resemble a large hybrid between a peacock and a leopard due to their colouration and feathered fan tail. Sexual Dimorphism in the sexes are extreme. Females are generally much smaller compared to the males, reaching 6ft at the shoulder. Their pelt colour is a selection of browns, faun and oranges, while their skull shape is more round and short compared to their male counterparts. The males are much larger and stockier than the females, at 8ft at the shoulder, their coats are generally a mix of blues, greens and orange, with a large peacock-like tail feather. A male’s coat colour is most likely used for attracting mates, though this is a theory as this species is very elusive and a live male has not been seen in person in about 100 years.


A Crested Jaguar’s limbs make it adept to climbing, crawling and swimming, their skulls are robust and the jaw extremely powerful, rumored to be able to pierce through even the strongest of armour, which makes these cats incredibly dangerous and deadly.

Their range is very limited in the valley of Roanoak, usually a large male will have a large territory with several females in. Arcgate ruins is said to be the home to a large male for years, the individual is so elusive it has been described as being mythical, a silly urban legend to tell at bedtime stories. However, evidence such as prints, claw marks and scat have been found, proving it is indeed real. Though no one has been brave enough to venture into the ruins.''

It was a street, just like the many Kaelan had seen in movies and series, though this one was barren of rushing cars. It stretched beyond what his eyes could catch, going into hiding amidst the fog. From large cracks surfaced all sorts of greenery, completely ignorant of the faded yellow divider lines in the highway. As an appealing landing strip, Kae dipped down from the sky, unfurling his rounded tail and lowering his legs. He braced for the landing, and despite his care to not go too fast, he still felt his right wing crashing with something, putting him out of equilibrium and sending him skidding along the pavement.

A moment for recovery was enough to have him up and going again. He looked up, eyes widening at the creaking sound behind him. He turned, the cacophony of groaning metal and wood making his feathers stand on end, even more so with the tapping rain. A power line lazily angled down, every degree accompanied by the horrible whining. It finally came to rest on the bushery of one of many trees that lined the street. Kaelan sighed, glad to not have broken anything himself, and just hoped he hadn’t cut the electricity to some distant town.

I wanted at least something to post in December considering I usually don’t have much (all my remaining energy is reserved for gift art this time of year), so I managed to finish a drawing of Queen Eagle, mother to Prince Arvais in Feather Knights. I’ve been fiddling with her and King Eagle’s designs off-and-on for a while, but never anything polished until now. Some stuff might change when I do her full body design, but it was fun to do more of a closeup/portrait of the character, it’s been a while!

I get endless inspiration from animal themed costuming (that’s pretty much why The Wing Knight Saga exists in the first place haha), so it was fun to find ways to incorporate the harpy eagle’s feather pattern and colours into this design. Though I have yet to draw her husband, I plan to have her be taller/larger than him, alluding to the harpy eagle’s status as one of the largest eagle species.

Extra Details: 3 fingers/toes on hands/feet, 4 feathers on hind legs, X marking on back, she has no eyelashes, appears to have fur but they are covered in fine feathers similar to that of the Silkie chicken, triangular tongue is a light blue colour, really long rabbit like ears that are floppy at the ends, eyes have vertical slit pupils.
