“I haven’t time to play with you today," Garland's tone was blunt, yet carried enough of an edge to betray his anxiety. "Find your battles elsewhere."
To see him turn down a fight was a surprise. Still, Luka knew better than to dive in head first, and approached the other knight slowly, lest he take unknown bait. "I have no intentions to fight an unwilling partner," he announced. "And you seem agitated enough without my presence."
The older knight scowled ahead, biting off a growl bubbling in the back of his throat. Damn his hide. He was getting soft. And yet he could not ignore the soft groan beneath his chin.
Ress shifted uneasily against his armor, mumbling a mostly unintelligible mishmash of sounds with only a faint "didn't mean to.. I didn't mean to," surfacing from the bog of what he suspected were illness laden dreams- dark murky affairs, as hard to escape as a sucking peat bog.
The Warrior behind him went forgotten as he moved to soothe her. "Ssh, hush... You aren't in trouble.. You're safe. Be still."
Luka's face softened at the unfolding scene. Ress had defended Garland openly and often, keenly aware that no matter his lust for battle and blood, he was still a man of honor, a knight to the core. In that moment the young warrior certainly believed it.
"I'm a fool," Garland groused. "Going soft.. But I cannot bring myself to abandon a fallen comrade..."
A hand moved to his arm. "There is no foolishness in aiding an ally," Luka replied with some confidence. "Did you see what happened?"
For a moment the harshness fell away, and the concern beneath creased Garland's face with worry. "I am unsure. I found her huddled against the trunk of a tree just off the Melmond Fens, burning with fever."
"To where are you bound?"
"I remember a den hide she dug due east. Provided it is still there-"
Luka pressed on. "And if not?"
"Then I will take her to the old shrine if I must." Garland's voice growled with impatience, eyes darting here and there, watching. The enemy could be anywhere. "If she is to recover she will need a safe place to rest. If you will excuse me-"
"Wait!" The younger warrior dashed after Garland as the man pressed forward, mission set in his mind. "Please-"
Garland stopped short, whirling around to glare at him. "Not so loudly, boy-" he hissed. "You'll wake her."
Luka's voice lowered, quiet and pleading. "Please- Let me go with you."
Garland narrowed his eyes. “Why?”
The young warrior's response was instant. "We share a common goal. To render aid to a fallen ally. Is that not reason enough?"
Garland uttered a guttural hum and wrinkled his nose. Not the best of signs, prompting Luka to all but turn to leave when-
“Very well, but move quickly and speak softly. Until we are sure what this mystery illness is, the sooner we get her somewhere quiet, where she can rest without being disturbed, the better."
"Hmn!"
At least he needed no further prompting, The older knight thought as Luka quickly fell in step with him, and was competent enough a soldier to keep pace well. All that was left was to hope that his memory had not failed him involving that den...
The sooner they were hidden, the better.
