The claviamundos (the name is a stylistic evolution of the Latin "Clavis ad Mundos", meaning "key to worlds"), also known as cantuclavis (lat. "singing key") is a magical device used to facilitate travel between various worlds, known as Mundi. Resembling a tuning fork, the claviamundos features four prongs, each equipped with adjustable weight sliders that enable precise tuning to the unique vibrational frequencies of different worlds.

The claviamundos operates on the principle that each mundus has a distinct frequency. The device's four adjustable prongs allow users to precisely align these frequencies through carefully positioned weights. This precise tuning is critical, as inaccuracies can result in failed transfers or misdirected journeys to unintended, often unknown, destinations.

To use the claviamundos, the user must strike each prong with a small tuning hammer to produce a tone, then adjust the weight until the resonance aligns perfectly with the target world's frequency. Once the tuning is finished, all four prongs are struck. The complexity of tuning generally restricts its use to known worlds with established frequency records. The risks associated with exploring unknown frequencies are well-documented, highlighted by several explorers who vanished while attempting to discover new Mundi. As a result, most users are cautious, preferring the claviamundos for travel to familiar locations.

While not as common as specialized magical portals, the claviamundos is a recognized and occasionally utilized tool for traveling between mundi. It is especially valued in scenarios where portable or emergency travel options are necessary, making it a prized possession for explorers and researchers. For ease of use, or in case of emergency situations, there are also claviamundi that come pre-tuned to a specific mundus.
Though not enveloped in the same level of mystery as more ancient or arcane artifacts, its technical nature and the precision required for its operation imbue it with a certain allure among practitioners of magic.

The Claviamundos is part of my Powers Within worldbuilding project. I saw a drawing somewhere that inspired me. I think it was something out of Dungeons and Dragons.
