Leopard shark drawn for Swim On vol.7 (2021 July)
Named for the pattern along their back, leopard sharks (_Triakis semifasciata_) are sociable houndsharks that primarily live along the Pacific North American coast in bays and estuaries. Unlike their brown smoothhound shark relatives, leopard sharks have smaller and more numerous red blood cells, which allow them to more effectively process oxygen in the oxygen-poor estuarine waters they actively predate.
