The dodo once hailed from the island of Mauritius, and is well-known for... well, being silly, and being extinct. Island species are very vulnerable to the introduction of new predators and the dodo was no exception. Neither were many of its compatriots on the island, but not all stories on Mauritius end sadly! The Mauritius kestrel was once on the verge of extinction with only four known birds remaining, but because of staggering conservation efforts it was successfully rescued from that brink. Now there are hundreds of Mauritius kestrels and the breeding program that kept them around focuses on other critically endangered birds. **Like what you see?
