They are both Draconic deities that were once mortal, but gave up their mortality to become guardian nature deities. In reality, Zeph was once a Wood Elf, but is now a massive Elemental Tempest which became a dragon from being in contact with Karith, and Karith was a Red Dragonborn who is now a massive Platinum dragon. The two tend to show up disguised to help others, but not all the time. They just enjoy being able to enjoy each others' company.
