In the original iteration of Vira's story, they and Captain Shae Lockhart were in a relationship together. She helped them get away from their family and once enough distance was put between Vira and their hometown, the two of them wound up staying (temporarily) apart for safety reasons until Vira was sure what they wanted to do.

Current iteration: They're still together, but rather than Shae being at sea while Vira stays on land, Vira is a full time member of Shae's pirate crew, serving as her sailing master. Vira's little brother, Matty, stays aboard the ship as a simple passenger as he's still rather young.

Shae Lockhart is a bold and ambitious pirate captain who suffers no fools, has absolutely no filter, and loves her crew like family.

It's all a work in progress, obviously, but I'm far too attached to Shae to give her up. Her existence goes back a lot further than Vira's, but as I was dealing with a rather stubborn art block at the time I imagined her, I just never got around to making any character art of her. I'm hoping to have some new art of her soonish.
