Their species can shapeshifter they body into an animal body, they can't choose it, it is written in the DNA of the single individuals, canines and felines are the most common, equines, deer and cattles are the common, birds, reptiles, aquatic animals and other living beings are the super rare one, they can shift only in an animal that have almost their same size, shifting in an smaller or bigger animal size (like an elepant or a mice) can be very dangerous and tiring if the individual isn't trained in the proper way, they can't stay in that form for long time, usually aroun a minute. The individual that can shif in an animal size similar to their can stay in that body for much more time, like weeks, military people (including our protagonists) are trained and can remain in the animal body for months.
I'm super jealous of this nameless story, there is another fundamental point but I don't want to tell it because I'm afraid someone could stole my idea, so for now I did not say nothing more than what is written up.
